Package Delivery Thefts

This is the time of year when residents receive more package deliveries than normal.  Whether you are expecting a delivery or receiving gifts, here are some things you can do that can help prevent thefts of packages during the holiday season or at any time of the year:

  • Choose a shipping option that requires someone to sign for delivery.
  • Check delivery status online or over the phone with the delivery company so you can be home when a package is delivered. Some retailers and delivery companies even offer to send text messages to your cell phone or emails sent to you when the items have been delivered.
  • Post a note on your door asking if the delivery person would leave the package with a trusted neighbor.
  • Arrange to have a package shipped to another location where someone is available to receive it, such as a friend or relative’s home, your workplace or a local store that handles mail services.
  • Ask a trusting neighbor or friend to retrieve any package any time they see one on your doorstep when you aren’t home. Make sure they let you know when they do.
  • If you did not receive your package after its delivery was confirmed, report it to the delivery company and your local law enforcement agency.
  • Thefts of packages from doorsteps often occur during the day time. Please contact your local law enforcement agency as quickly as possible if you observe a delivery truck being followed by a vehicle while making deliveries, or anyone acting suspicious in front of a residence or removing packages from the front door area of someone’s home.
  • As with any other suspicious circumstances, it is helpful for responding Officers if you can provide the descriptions of any people, vehicle and license plates if they can be obtained safely.
  • Call 9-1-1 if you observe any emergency or crime in progress. To reach the Fountain Valley Police Department non-emergency line, dial (714) 593-4485 (24 hours).
