Dispatch Center
Our Dispatchers field over 20,000 911 calls every year. New software has been developed and implemented to assist our dispatchers in handling this volume of emergency calls. The new software and training enables our dispatchers to process calls quicker and get emergency resources rolling much faster then ever before.
Our Dispatchers are encouraged to specialize in their own areas of interest, thus imparting expert knowledge to all Dispatchers in particular areas. For example, one Dispatcher has demonstrated a keen interest in the Department's handling of Restraining Orders, which involves accurate record keeping, constant legal responsibilities and special care on behalf of protected persons.
Training is a top priority to our Dispatchers. Initially, a new Dispatcher starts with a structured three-month period alongside another Dispatcher. On-the-job training is constant with new computer equipment and in quarterly meetings where current issues are discussed.
1995 saw the implementation of a formal Lead Dispatcher position, which has allowed for a more direct and effective communications link. As a result, the general operation has improved, and the service to the community has been positively affected.
Our Dispatchers would like to remind you that the 911 system should be used only in EMERGENCY situations or where IN PROGRESS CRIMES are to be reported. Non-Emergency calls can be made to 714-593-4484, or to our Desk Officer at 714-593-4485.
