MAJOR INJURY TRAFFIC COLLISION | |
| On Wednesday, 11/5/09 at approximately 1:46 PM, Fountain Valley Police Department patrol officers responded to Ellis Ave., west of Bushard St. regarding an injury traffic collision. Upon arrival units located a two vehicle collision that also involved a sheared power pole and downed electrical wires. Subsequent investigation revealed that a gold 1996 Chevrolet Silverado truck being driven by Baron L. Mahling, 62, Huntington Beach, was E/B on Ellis Ave. A black 1998 Nissan Frontier truck driven by Todd B. Gruca, 31, Fountain Valley was W/B on Ellis Ave. The E/B Chevrolet crossed into the W/B lanes, sideswiping the Nissan, causing the Chevrolet to jump the curb on the north side of Ellis and strike the power pole and a block wall. Mahling suffered major head and chest injuries and remains unconscious in critical condition in an area hospital. Gruca sustained minor injuries and was released at the scene. Preliminary investigation indicates that Mahling crossed into oncoming traffic at a high rate of speed prior to the collision. FVPD traffic investigators have been unable to locate independent witnesses and ask anyone who witnessed the collision, or may have any other information to contact the Fountain Valley P.D.
