In 2006 the Fountain Valley Police Department joined forces with the West County SWAT Team. The West County SWAT Team is a regional Special Weapons and Tactics Team serving the cities of Cypress, Los Alamitos, Westminster and Fountain Valley. West County SWAT consists of police personnel made of four distinct units including; Tactical Officers, Tactical Emergency Paramedics, Crisis Negotiators and Tactical Dispatchers. Joining West County SWAT resulted in a four-fold increase in personnel trained for tactical operations. As a partner on this team, police personnel train a minimum of 10 hours per month in critical incident management, tactics and pre-planned responses to a variety of dangerous incidents.
Team supervisors are responsible for the readiness of crisis negotiators, tactical dispatchers, tactical paramedics, containment, react, entry and sniper teams. Each Team is skill specific and work in concert toward a peaceful resolution of life threatening incidents. Team members are selected from each Department after undergoing a stringent review of their performance in their basic jobs functions, and in the case of tactical team members, a shooting and physical proficiency test.
This group of specially trained and highly skilled personnel are utilized where disciplined team work, specialized weaponry, tactical skills and crisis negotiation skills are required to deal with high risk law enforcement incidents. West County SWAT is trained to resolve a variety of situations such as barricaded suspects, active shooters, hostage situations and to serve high risk search and/or arrest warrants.
